A ROOFER who confessed to having sex with a 14-year-old schoolgirl has disputed he is the father of her unborn child.

The prosecution at Worcester Crown Court insisted 29-year-old Robin Beard made the girl pregnant during a five-month love affair.

But defence barrister Walter Bealby said Beard did not accept he was the father and was happy to take a DNA test after the birth of the baby in July.

Beard, of Godson Crescent, Kidderminster, pleaded guilty to two counts of having unlawful sex and one of threatening behaviour towards the girl.

Recorder Paul Glenn granted him bail until May 9. He asked the prosecution to further interview the girl and her doctor.

The couple met last year and formed a relationship, said prosecutor Gareth Walters. They had sex on "numerous occasions", he said, when the girl was aged 14 and 15 before their romance ended.

The girl told police her parents were unhappy with the relationship because of their age differences. She said Beard's parents were disgusted.

They met up again briefly after a split but during a heated row Beard threw a ring at the girl and branded her a slag, said Mr Walters.

In a police interview, Beard acknowledged he knew the girl was under the age of consent.

Mr Walters said an "unfortunate result" of the relationship was that the girl fell pregnant.

Beard had spent two months in custody and three months in a bail hostel, which was a severe curtailment of his liberty, said Mr Bealby.

He alleged that prescribed drugs being taken by Beard at the time the girl conceived made him incapable of having sex. Beard insists the baby was fathered by another partner.
