I AM writing in response to recent letters by Mr Pagett and Mr Robinson regarding cycling in the Wyre Forest.

I am not affiliated to any cycling group but do enjoy cycling on roads and in the forest near my home.

It has always struck me that the wonderful thing about the Wyre Forest is that it offers something for anyone who wants to spend time outdoors.

It is one of the few places where walkers, cyclists, horse riders and nature lovers can all enjoy the same area.

The recent letters seem to imply that cyclists are a menace to all the other user groups and polluters of the environment.

Following their comments on erosion I went into the forest and I did see lots of erosion. Some was caused by walkers; some by horses and a minority by cyclists, but most was caused by Forestry Commission vehicles, which plough great furrows through the woods.

Everyone who uses the forest for any reason leaves some trace of their passing and bikes are no more guilty than the rest.

Regarding the alleged danger caused to other users by cyclists, in my view it is much more likely you will be seriously injured driving to the forest than by a cyclist inside it.

Bicycle riders are in more danger of being injured by cars than they are to cause harm to others.

However, one way of minimising any risk is to go ahead with the work on a cycle route, so that we can ride our bikes in a safe environment away from walkers.

Surely the forest is big enough for us all to use with care. I personally can't wait to try out the new cycle route and would like to thank all those who have brought it about.
