THE Cropthorne Walkabout will take place this May Day Bank Holiday weekend.
This annual event has become an important part of the village calendar. Cropthorne boasts one of the county's finest Saxon remains, a carved stone cross head. The relic forms the basis of this year's theme, crosses.
Richard Mumford, chairman of the Cropthorne Walkabout committee said: "The theme for this year's walkabout is a very simple one and perhaps somewhat surprisingly has not been used as a theme in previous Walkabouts."
Many Cropthorne residents will open their private gardens to visitors over the weekend. There will also be special flower arrangements on display in the church. Numerous stalls will be selling a variety of items including homemade cakes and preserves, handicrafts and local produce. There will also be an exhibition of paintings.
On Sunday there will be the Celebration Reed as well as a brass band and Morris dancers. Local school children will perform Maypole dancing on Monday, and there will also be puppets and a magic show. Refreshments are available on both days.
Mr Mumford said: "With so much to see for adults and children we expect and hope for the usual good turnout. This is a fun, relaxed day out for everybody who are most welcome."
Entry fee is £3 for adults, £2.50 for OAPs and 50 pence for children. There is no charge for the under 5's. Entry includes car parking and access to the many gardens and other attractions. For further information call 01386 860373.
