The two-year-old little girl of Charles Franklin, ostler at the Swan Hotel, had a very narrow escape from drowning on Saturday afternoon. The child was playing with several other children in a field at the back of the Swan Hotel and fell into the pool which was full of water. The cries of the children attracted the attention of Mr J. Brick, who fortunately was not far away at he time, and he ran to the pool and succeeded in rescuing in the child. She was, however, in an exhausted condition and did not recover from the shock for some hours.

As yet no name has been bestowed upon Evesham's new bridge. If the authorities concerned are desirous of naming the bridge we would suggest to them that the sooner it is done the better. Otherwise, for local people at least, it will be the "New Bridge" and will continue to remain so indefinitely. Mr Joseph Bailey, of Evesham, when he first brought forward the idea of a bridge at this spot in the columns of the Journal over forty years ago, suggested Victoria Bridge, but this would hardly be appropriate now. At any rate, this handsome and useful structure is already being referred to as the "New Bridge" and the "New Bridge" it may well remain.

Rumours that the component villages of the Littletons wished to hold separate celebrations of the Coronation were denied by Mr. L. Jones (chairman) at a meeting this week of the Coronation committee. He said he was very sorry to hear that rumours had got around that the villages wished to "split." This was a great pity, he said. He appealed to all to "hold together" and give honour to our Queen. Mr Aston said there was a great deal of dissension, particularly over the arrangement for feeding the children and the old age pensioners, as it would be impossible to cater for them all in the Village Hall.

Wychavon is about to launch a poll to find out whether Evesham shopkeepers are in favour of six-day trading. Letters are about to be sent to 200 traders in the town centre and the Bengeworth and Hampton areas seeking an answer by May 31. If more than 50 per cent vote yes, early closing on Wednesday afternoons could be abolished by mid-July. But even if there is a majority vote in favour, shopkeepers will not be compelled to make use of the extra half-day's trading.
