WYRE Forest wordsmiths could see their work in a poetry anthology if they shine in a national competition.

Last year Stourport's Chris Carter was one of 236 winners in the National Poetry Anthology but the organisers want a representative from all three district towns in the new edition.

"Every year we're picking more winners," said anthology editor Peter Quinn. "In the first year, 1998, we had 130."

Tens of thousands of entries pour in from hopefuls across the country and the 2004 anthology - which is designed to encourage new writers - is due out next spring.

Each of the successful entrants, who receive a free copy of the book, will then vote for an overall winner who receives £1,000.

Entries up to 160 words should be sent to United Press Ltd, Admail 3735, London EC1B 1JB, enclosing a loose stamp.

Each writer can send up to three poems.
