CHILDREN have been put in danger by vandal attacks at Great Malvern Primary School, says headmaster Jonathan Sides.

Fencing around the pond and environmental area - which cost £1,400 - has been smashed and the pond filled with beer cans and debris.

A £500 storage shed had roofing felt and boards ripped off, while 50 fence posts around the adventure playground were torn up.

Graffiti has been scrawled across play equipment and bottles smashed in the playground

Mr Sides said: "The greatest danger is that a toddler could wander into the environmental area and be drowned because there's no fence to protect him. I don't suppose for one minute that these vandals think even once, let alone twice, about the consequences of their actions.

"This makes me both sad and extremely angry. Sad to think some people can think of nothing better to do and angry when I think of the cost of this vandalism."

The school installed CCTV cameras after as spate of vandalism last summer. Despite the recent attacks, Mr Sides said the system had worked and could be extended.

Its successes have included identifying a burglar who was prosecuted, several vandals who were warned by police and who paid compensation, and a number of trespassers who have been sent warning letters.

Mr Sides said: "No one can enter school grounds without being detected by the cameras, images are good enough for identification, and I take digital stills from the monitor, which are published in the school for identification."

He is appealing to parents and other members of the community to help catch the latest attackers.
