I WRITE in response to the various letters that have appeared over the last few weeks regarding the future of the Market House, in the context of the Disability Discrim-ination Act.
The article, which appeared in the Daily Mail, and is now displayed in positions within the town is, I believe, an ill-informed and cheap attack on various individuals who have chosen to face up to a difficult situation rather than to 'bury it'. They are not "politically-correct twerps" but rather individuals who are committed to the town and work hard for its future well being.
The issue of the future of the Market House has predictably generated a great deal of emotion and contention and I have no doubt that those on both sides of the argument genuinely feel they have the best interests of the town at heart. There are two opposing points of view, both sides need to listen more carefully to what the other has to say and articles such as the above do nothing to move the situation forward.
I do not believe that anyone wants to see the Market House despoiled in any way, and as I understand it, the proposed alterations do not seek to do this.
I would like to see the Market House continue to be a focal and living symbol of the town. A building used by community groups, weddings and for other functions, rather than just an historic landmark, that, without these adaptations, may have to close its doors permanently, to everyone's loss.
JILL JUPP, Pound Close, Ledbury.
