CAN I enlighten Peter Luff MP? His letter (You Say, Friday, April 18) shows he has been out of touch with local government in his constituency for some time.

The Conservatives have run Wychavon District Council by dictatorship with little input from local councillors, let alone the people they represent.

This led to some very unpopular decisions, such as the closure of the Droitwich Spa Lido and the delayed introduction of the waste recycling scheme.

Far from giving value for money, the Conservatives increased the Band D Council tax by £11.33 in their four-year term, while the Lib Dem-led joint administration increased it by only £7.30.

Furthermore, the only way the Tories could make ends meet was by taking money from reserves that will lead to problems in the future.

The Liberal Democrats were able to reduce spending on bureaucracy between 1995 and 1999 by modernising the structure of the council and introducing other ways of working in order to keep the council tax down while improving services.

Unfortunately, the Conservatives tried to put the clock back.

MARGARET ROWLEY,

Leader, Liberal Democrat Group,

Wychavon District Council.
