N TAYLOR states that park-and-ride costs the council tax payer £25,000 a year to run. This figure is more like £60,000 when you add the loss in revenue in the city centre car parks.

County Councillor Colin Beardwood claims that more people shop in Worcester because of park-and-ride.

How come? Before bus lanes, Worcester held the record for eight years where more money passed over the counters of the City High Street stores on a Saturday than any other town in the West Midlands. Worcester no longer holds that record, so the claim cannot be true.

L Spiteri claims that park-and-ride has had no effect on traffic levels. A hundred park-and-ride sites would have no effect. Worcester is a commuter city. More people pass through the city centre to get to work on the other side of town than work in its centre.

That is why city centre car parks are little used before 9.30am in the morning. Extra park-and-ride sites with the bus lanes will make the problem worse. Just wait and see. Park-and-ride is a disaster that's costing us dearly. It is something Worcester could well do without.
