DROITWICH Spa light middleweight boxer Matt Greening produced one of his best performances to defeat Aberystwyth's Steve Welsby on points.
Greening topped the bill at Droitwich Amateur Boxing Club's tournament at Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club last Saturday and was always the sharper puncher in a cracking contest.
The 21-year-old used his right cross, left hook combination intelligently against his Welsh southpaw opponent who played his part in a memorable contest.
Greening's win capped a successful night for Spa boxers who won six of their nine bouts although fights for Michael Pardoe and Alex Strutt fell through on the day.
Middleweight Todd Reeves, aged 20, continued his successful comeback with a points win over another Aberystwyth boxer, Jamie Ambler.
Reeves scored well with fast jabs and long left hooks while moving elusively around the ring to frustrate Ambler.
Seventeen-year-old Anthony Bonehill saw off yet another Aberystwyth opponent, James Beasley. Bonehill had an excellent opening round and launched a blistering attack at the start of the second. Beasley rallied but was forced to retire at the end of the round with a groin strain.
Anthony's brother, Marc, aged 16, made it a family double with a well-deserved hard fought victory over Worcester's John Butler.
Adam Mytton, in his first contest since losing a national schools final in March, scored a deserved points victory over Steve Miah (Northolt, London). In a bout between two of the top schoolboys in the country, 15-year-old Mytton had the edge in the first two rounds and held on well under pressure in the third to land one of the best wins of his career.
Sean Donnelly, aged 13, put his recent run of bad luck behind him with a determined display in outpointing David Hunter (Triumph, Coventry).
Andy Ogden started well against Brian Hathaway (Downend, Bristol) but tired late on to lose on points.
Elsewhere, 13-year-old Callum Nally put in a gutsy display against John Ringham (Walcot, Swindon) but lost on points in only his second bout.
