IN 1970 there was a certain amount of excitement over what to call the newly-built old people's flats in Church Street. The County Council initially proposed Knowle Hill, before it was pointed out that there was already a local area called Knowle Hill.
After some little deliberation they plumped for Durcott Lodge, although the building was neither a lodge nor anywhere near the Durcott (just think where Durcott Lane is).
The Journal, which favoured Church Street with flat numbers, appealed for suggestions. Names sent in by readers included Rest Hall, Welcome Hall, Mount Pleasant and The Haven. Harry Ward suggested Nabarro House in honour of the long-service (long-suffering? Long-suffered?) MP for South Worcestershire, Sir Gerald Nabarro (commonly known as NAB).
Now that EPHA has done such an excellent job in re-building Durcott Lodge (a serious improvement over the old eyesore), I wondered whether they might like to consider giving it a new name.
For myself, I rather like Harry Ward's suggestion. What do other folk think?
