IN the final match of the Worcester and District Saturday League Division One between champions Langland and Welland Athletic an epic struggle developed.
LANGLAND SPORTS 2, WELLAND ATHLETIC 1
The experienced Langland squad, with only three losses all season, were up against the division's newcomers, Welland, with an average age of just 18 but with four consecutive wins before this game.
Both sides competed well and Langlands deserved their goal midway through the half as a cross from the right cleared the central defence for the winger to head home.
Early in the second half Langland surprisingly went 2-0 up as a through ball caught the Welland defence flatfooted.
This reversal seemed to inspire Welland who created numerous chances and it was no surprise when Simon Craddock jinked past the defence near the corner flag to put Amott through, who scored from an acute angle.
Welland pushed forward with wave upon wave of attacks and heroics from men of the match Ben Nineham and Brett Cullen, who broke up Langland's flow.
Time ran out with Langland 2-1 winners but relieved to hear the final whistle when a draw would have reflected a fair result.
Welland, sponsored by Star Inn, Upton and Midland Communi-cations, will be holding training and trials in June. Please contact Richard Coles on (01684) 833543 to register interest.
