AN explosion of colour enthralled crowds at this year's Malvern May Day festival.
The festival's theme of fire and earth was taken to heart by those taking part in the parade, with various dragons and phoenixes adding to the atmosphere.
A fire show marked the climax of the event in Priory Park, where there was also a variety of music, dance and entertainment throughout the day.
Organiser Phil Howard said: "I think everybody had a great time. It was very colourful with about 200 people involved in the parade, five bands and dance performances.
"About 1,000 people attended throughout the day, so from that point of view it was extremely successful."
Local schools, including The Chase High School, Colwall Primary School, The Grove Primary School and Madresfield CE Primary School, took part in the parade, along with dancers from Abberley and Martley. Craft stalls, local charities and campaigning groups were also on hand to make the 10th festival one of the best.
Mr Howard said the highlight of the afternoon was the performance of two local bands based at Malvern Youth Centre. A bumper crowd of youngsters enjoyed music from Misused and Push Me Under.
An evening party was also held in the park to close the festivities.
Organisers are already looking forward to next year's extra-special event. The festival always takes place on a Saturday and in 2004 this will fall on May 1 itself.
To prepare for the event, more members are needed to sit on the festival's organising committee. Anyone interested in getting involved, should ring 01684 573451.
