THE Malvern U14 Pirates ended their season with an eight try fiesta against Old Yardlieans, who tried to spoil the Pirates party with a commendable comeback, scoring four tries of their own at the halfway point in the game.
MALVERN U14 Pirates 48pts, OLD YARDLIEANS 24 pts
The Pirates started in a boisterous mood despite not playing together for four weeks. Tries from David Morgans (two), Craig Smith, Will Bowen and David Wood with conversions from new fly-half, Russell Finch, set the homeside in a comfortable 29-0 lead as the half-time break approached. Too comfortable it seemed, as Old Yards made a useful comeback scoring two tries either side of half-time to narrow Malvern's lead to just five points.
However, the Old Yards purple patch soon fizzled away as Malvern reasserted their dominance in the open-play with Ben Mason, Will Bowen and Rhys Coles demonstrating the true power of the team's back-row forwards.
Further tries from Will Bowen and David Wood edged the Pirates in front and the afternoon was topped with a stunning effort from winger Giles Dawson, who made sure of his debut try for the Pirates in the final minutes of the match.
Man of the match for the Banana Fitness & Health sponsored outfit was flanker Ben Mason, whose tireless support and defensive capabilities were instrumental in the Pirates end-of-season victory against an ever-improving Old Yardieans outfit.
