CLEARLY referring to the Iran/Iraq War of 1981-1989, Julian Thake (You Say, April 21) points out that we supported Saddam Hussein because he was perceived to be the lesser evil.
For once I agree with this correspondent. However, that is as far as it goes.
The fact is that it is becoming clear that Saddam was the lesser danger in his own country as well.
It seems that Iraq will now be taken over by fanatical Shia fundamentalists similar to those who deposed the Shah and seized power in Iran.
Too many people in North America, Western Europe and Australia call for worldwide democracy.
The truth is that, due to cultural differences, many of the world's countries are not suited for democracy and never will be.
The West should leave the responsible people in other countries to act as they see fit.
