Under an Act of parliament dated 1831 which makes it an offence to make "unreasonable use of the highway", Redditch police hope to put an end to the prevalent practice of using the streets as a daytime garage.
Ten kerbside parking places in the town and one in Feckenham are being provided but a limit of four hours is being put on their use.
For the first time, motorists using the prescribed parking places may leave their cars after dark without lights.
The new parking regulations came into force on Saturday when the new bus station in Red Lion Street was opened.
