WHEN I first moved to Church Hill in 1983, I didn't expect to have my area ruined by the great big, hideous-looking detached houses built in Hither Green Lane.

But tough, I had to put up with it or move. Those who live in that area have the same choice as I did either before or after the Abbey Stadium project is completed.

We cannot allow a few people to ruin the future prosperity or the future leisure and educational provisions the project will give our town just because they fear they will be inconvenienced by its presence.

Yes, they have a right to put forward their ideas on how the scheme will fit into the area with the minimum of disruption.

Yes, they have a right to insist the project conforms to all health and safety standards and that the legal noise limits are not exceeded.

Yes, they have a right to insist the owners conduct their business within the legal framework laid down by various Government tiers.

But no, they do not have a right to stop others using the land they own to develop it within the boundaries of its planning permission.

No, they do not have a right to assume the law will be broken by those using the provision with regards to litter and public disorder.

The plans I have details of seem to take into account the increase in traffic, the movement of people and other general logistical issues in a more than adequate way.

The benefits to our town of the Abbey Stadium project are far too great to let the unknown problems that may or may not occur stand in the way.
