Three star
'IT'S all about music.' So says Dave Grohl about Later with Jools Holland.
And it is. In this case, going back to basics with raw, unadulterated rock in its purest form - a couple of guys on guitar, one on drums and plenty of grunge thrown in for good measure.
Louder follows on from the success of the 10th anniversary DVD package to celebrate Jools' baby, which has gone quietly from cult status to one of the most respected music shows since The Old Grey Whistle Test.
The secret of this success? Allowing artists to play their music the way they want - live, and in this case, very, very loud.
From the original ageing rockers Metallica to the new wave of young bands like The Hives and The White Stripes, this collection brings together everyone who is anyone in the world of rock.
The fantastic Foo Fighters themselves kick off the music with a brilliant performance of All My Life, with the baton being taken up by the equally exciting Queens of the Stone Age with No One Knows, although sadly without Mr Grohl guesting on drums.
What follows is nearly two hours of Ash, Hole, Garbage, Stereophonics, New Order, The Datsuns, Mercury Rev and The Vines to name but a few - some good, some not so good, but all obviously thoroughly enjoying what they do.
The DVD package is nicely put together, including exclusive interviews with several artists and easy-to-use interactive features.
This collection may not be for everyone but it is a great tribute to Jools and a must for rock fans old and young.
