MAY Day bank holiday saw some big weights taken at the Broad Acres Open held on the Stock pool.
Leading the field was John Harris (Triplex AC) who pole fished luncheon meat at peg five for 88-6-8. Club mate Geoff Hunt was second with 77-10-0; third, Pete Willis (Solihull Angling), 70-9-0.
Tuesday saw the Northfield Starlets Veterans at Woodlands Views Deans pool with Mike Millinchip (Kidderminster) taking first place by pole fishing casters and maggots up in the water at peg 37 for 33-11-0. Second was Stan James (Bewdley) with 32-0-0 and third, Brian Hill ( Stourport), taking 26-4-0.
On Thursday, Telfish AC held its spring cup event at Wolverley on the Staffordshire-Worcestershire Canal and heavy boat traffic spoiled what should have seen much better catches recorded.
Winner John Malin (Wolverhampton) was staked just below the lock where he pole fished squats and pinkies for Gudgeon. Late in the contest, a bonus four pounds six ounce Chub took the bait to give him a total catch of 5-2-8. Runner-up Fred Green also found a bonus three pound Carp to boost his catch to 3-7-8 and Neil Ferriday was third courtesy of a teo pound Chub and a 3-6-8 total.
The KH Veterans fished its weekly contest at Elmbridge's Pheasant pool with Derek Buckle (Bewdley) showing the way by pole fishing Macaroni cheese at peg 38 for 39-14-0. Mick Taylor (Northfield) was second with 31-9-0 while third was Jim Faulds' (Stourbridge) 29-10-0.
On Saturday, the Annual 100 AC invitation club championship saw 13 teams of five compete at Lower Broad Heath. Leading the individual list was Birmingham angler Bill Wellings (Unity AC) who pole fished chopped worms at Willow pool peg 16 for 84-2-0. Tony Hughes (Brookfields AC) was a close second with 81-1-0 from old pool peg six; third, Tom Chellingsworth (Batchley AC), 77-0-0.
For the second year running Rexel AC took the champions shield with a 56-point tally; Unity AC were second with 50; third Barford AC 49.
At Broad Acres, the main lake open was topped by Harry Brotherton (Triplex) with a pole and corn catch of 47-0-0 from peg 23. Second, Graham Upton (Rover), had 33-0-0 while third was Paul Skidmore (Bronx) with 22-1-0.
Sixth round of the Preston Innovations Woodlands View Spring League was won by Les Thompson (Shakespeare) who pole fished chopped worms and caters at Arles pool peg 16 for 76-1-0, runner up Steve Ford (DGL) had 55-5-0,third Richard Lawson (Colmic Blue) 49-14-0.
DGL topped the days points list with 11, Ted Carter 17, Oxford Drennan A 18. Ted Carters lead the league with 136, Daiwa Trentmen Red and DGL are joint second on 142.
Lucas College Road AC fished its second bye contest on the Staffordshire-Worcrstershire Canal at Gothersley and just three fish were needed for victory for Terry Tombs, a Bream of two pounds plus two Chub taken with pole fished maggots from just below the lock for a 2-9-8 total. At the next adjacent peg was second placed club secretary Stan Jones who also had a Bream in his 1-9-0 catch; third, Derek Willis, 1-8-0.
On Sunday, the Astwood Fisheries Bluebell pool open was won by Scott Smith (Smithies Angling Centre) with a pole and chopped worm catch of 45-14-0 from peg seven. Peter Bailey (Droitwich Angling Centre) took 42-7-8 for second while third went to Stuart Aston (Swan AC) with 35-0-0.
The Woodlands View open went to Kieran Delia (Davis Angling) with 55-0-0 taken with pole worm and casters from Deans pool peg 46. Richard Leigh (Handsworth Angling) was second with 42-15-0 and third, Mick Denton (Oxford Drennan), taking 33-15-0.
At Moorlands Farm, Pete Short (Kidderminster) was the winner with a pole corn and pellet catch of 76-4-0 from the margins of Bank pool peg 14. Second was Steve Harris (Strike Angling) with 54-14-0; third, John Stockton (Heathway Tackle), 54-0-0.
