AN Astwood Bank ceramics student has fought off stiff competition from the rest of the country to scoop a top award.

Shirley George was one of only 109 from more than 750,000 eligible candidates to win a City and Guilds Medal for Excellence for her outstanding ceramics work.

Awarded annually since 1979, Medals for Excellence rewards talented people who have displayed exceptional standards as either a City and Guilds lecturer or candidate and whose work stands out from the crowd.

Shirley was nominated for the award by Usha Khosla, ceramics courses tutor at NEW College's Britten House School of Art, who will also receive a certificate for high standards of teaching and training on the part time course.

Shirley, a teacher, is now in the running to win one of eight prestigious UK Awards for Excellence, to be announced at an Oscars-style event celebrating lifelong learning in London on June 30.
