A leading light in promoting racial and ethnic harmony is hoping to form a group to galvanise multiculturalism in the city even further.

Jean Kennedy is organising a Let's Get Together meeting on Saturday, May 24, with the aim of providing an informal setting for the newly arrived overseas medical staff working at Worcester Royal Hospital and other isolated ethnic minorities in the city.

"It has been organised so that they can meet the community, but I am hoping it can be used as a springboard to set up the Interfaith Group," she said. "It is up to us to care for one another.

"Quite often people do not have the opportunity to meet anyone but those from their own cultural group.

"We need an organisation where people who want to know about other people can meet them."

Mrs Kennedy, who is on the executive board of the Worcestershire Race Equality Council, stresses that she is acting independently of the council on this particular project.

She is also a member of the Diocese of Worcester interfaith group and taught and co-ordinated Religious Education at Stanley Road Primary School in Worcester.

She hopes the meeting at St Barnabas Church Hall will result in lots of support for the creation of a permanent body.

It will run from 3pm - 6pm and people are encouraged to bring traditional food to share at a picnic.

There will also be a bouncy castle and ball pool to keep children entertained. People who want to attend should call Mrs Kennedy on 01905 22415.
