CECIL Duckworth is to continue backing Worcester Rugby Club's bid for the Premiership.

There were major fears around the club - following the Saturday, April 12, defeat to eventual champions Rotherham - that he'd scale down his commitment and turn the Sixways club semi-professional.

But with automatic promotion set to continue next year, he'll give coaches John Brain and Andy Keast the chance to keep their squad together and begin recruiting for the season ahead. What a relief!

The blast of clarity will allow them to begin the task of talking to the likes of Tim Walsh, Ben Hinshelwood, Chris Garrard and Craig Gillies, players who would most likely have moved if there was nothing to play for next season.

With Rotherham out of the picture next year, and relegated Bristol - on the brink of financial ruin - back in National One, it will be Worcester's best chance of promotion.

They'll face a test from Orrell but Worcester must believe that, if they add key signings to the current squad, the future's bright.

Once again, we take our hat off to Mr Duckworth for his commitment. In a game often tarnished with sickening self-interest and greed, it's astonishing to see such generosity.

In sharp contrast to other club-owners, he doesn't moan about his level of investment.

And he doesn't demand a return for his money by denying the basics of sport - namely the chance to progress.

Rugby, like any sport, has to be fuelled by ambition to maintain interest and investment. Worcester, once again, have been granted that hope.
