SECOND World War veterans were "sickened" after vandals smashed up their clubhouse.

Some 30 ex-servicemen use the building in Brinton Park, Kidderminster, twice a week along with four other groups including Brownies and a slimming club.

But windows, crockery, a pool table, furniture, a mirror and a clock - as well as the veranda - were all smashed by vandals in a two-night rampage that caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. ex-servicemen Jim Howell, Bernard Harrison, Dennis Powell and Frank Griffiths in their wrecked Brinton Park clubhouse.

Bernard Harrison, 81, who has been visiting the clubhouse for five years, said: "We feel a bit sick really. The members are quite upset about it."

He added: "They didn't steal anything. It's just a case of sheer vandalism - smashing anything they could see."

Mr Harrison went on: "We had a mirror over the fireplace, about 5ft by 4ft, which was valuable. It had been in the building since it was built in 1938 and it was smashed to smithereens."

Wyre Forest District Council, which owns the clubhouse, has boarded up the windows but the building's contents were not insured.

The district council's leisure manager Andrew Dickens said: "This was the first time vandals have got in and done such an extensive amount of damage."

Better locks had now been fitted, he added.
