THE second race of the Arden Trophy series was sailed on Sunday in a strong and blustery southerly wind.
Andrew Potts (Solo) quickly established a lead on the first beat, which he maintained for most of the long, fast and exciting downwind leg of the first lap.
Towards the end of that leg, however, he capsized, letting Ralph Evans (Solo) and Keith Stevens (Comet) overtake.
Potts recovered well to make up sufficient ground on the next two laps to beat Stevens, but he was unable to catch winner Evans.
Races later in the afternoon were sailed in similar conditions but the wind had veered a point giving the dinghies a harder beat to the windward mark.
Enterprise helm Stuart Stephens' efforts in the Enterprise/Burt Thurlow series were blighted when he capsized on the second beat leaving too great a deficit to recover.
Stevens won the Comet race and Evans recorded his second win of the day in the Burt Thurlow Handicap.
The first Wednesday evening meeting was a pursuit race sailed in a south westerly force two to three that gave the racers a comfortable time with no capsizes recorded.
It was nice to see John Tildersley in his Comet making his first appearance of the season. Racing was for the Caravan Keys Trophy so named as the caravan that had served as temporary site office, store and changing room was being dismantled.
Potts managed to catch Tildersley after half-an-hour although he made valiant attempts to get back in front leaving Potts with 20 lengths to spare.
Members are reminded that Wednesday racing starts at 7.15pm and a second taster day takes place on Sunday, June 8.
