ANOTHER rain-affected game failed to go the way of Kidderminster in Birmingham and District League Division One with their second losing draw in a row.

Despite good bowling, batting was made difficult by the weather and KCC could only claim six points against Leamington's 10.

Ted Baylis, who bowled a great stint of 27 overs, and Marc Derrick took four wickets each as Leamington were dismissed for 172 in 53.2 overs.

KCC asked the home side to bat after winning the toss though they put on 64 runs in 16 overs before losing their first wicket.

More wickets fell at 70, 90 and 100 but it became worse when they were struggling at 112-7 with 38 overs bowled.

Their ninth-wicket stand added 28 but KCC withstood three interruptions for rain to eventually bowl Leamington out.

Baylis took 4-65, Derrick 4-57 off 17 overs and Jonathan Wright 2-12 from 4.2 overs.

The rain reduced KCC's chance of a win but they had a poor start for the second week running.

Openers Mark Mansell and Wright were out for 1 and 2 runs respectively by the eighth over before Chris Jones scored just 12.

KCC had a fight on their hands at 15-3 after 10 overs but once again Vic Lawes and Craig Wood steadied the boat.

Lawes scored 43 not out and Wood 20 when rain stopped play for good.

Leamington 172, KCC 82-5.

A pulsating finish saw KCC claim a good National Knockout Cup second round victory against Premier League Shrewsbury on Sunday, despite endless stoppages for rain.

Shrewsbury lost an opener from Baylis' second ball but they settled down to reach 42 by the 12th over when Chris Pyke took a wicket.

Spinner Wright claimed danger man Anders (70) with Andy Siwicki holding onto his second catch of the match.

Dan Jeavons, Mansell and a Baylis run-out claimed the other wickets before rain forced an early tea.

KCC needed 155 runs from 28 overs but their openers again hit rocky ground when Wright departed for only two runs.

Mansell, however, made a solid 30 and was joined by the on-song Lawes who struck seven fours on his way to 55 runs.

The run flow had decreased following Mansell's departure with just 13 runs off four overs, leaving KCC needing 59 from 41 balls.

But their spirits were lifted by big sixes from Nigel Davenport (13) and Wood (35) though 12 runs were still required from the last 11 balls.

Baylis added another big boundary before later striking a four to give KCC a third-round home tie with Harborne on Sunday, May 25.

Shrewsbury 154-6, KCC 157-5.

KCC seconds looked set for a good result against Fordhouses until rain abandoned play with the visitors on 42-0.

They posted 194-7 with Colin Hemsley (53), Joe Hill (58), Gavin Evans (26) and Rob Bratt (31) all impressing.

KCC 2nds 194-7, Fordhouses 42-0.

A young and inexperienced thirds were only denied victory by the weather after an excellent display at home to West Malvern.

They restricted the visitors to 197-7 from 44 overs with excellent bowling and fielding.

Last season's leading wicket taker Lee Daniels was the pick of the bowlers with 4-43 but youngsters Peter Worn and Amerit Singh, who also held onto two tricky catches, deserve credit.

In reply, KCC started slowly, losing Rob Logan, Andy Logan and skipper Simon Trickett with just 26 runs on the board.

Fourteen-year-old opener Andrew Kimberlin built an outstanding unbroken 92-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Derek Cadwallader.

Kimberlin finished on 28 not out and 16-year-old Cadwallader an aggressive 60 not out when rain halted play.

West Malvern 197-7, KCC 3rds 118-3.
