POLICE have launched an arson investigation after two women were dramatically rescued from their Worcester flat last night.
The fire began when four cars next to their home - below the Hotpot caf, in Sherriff Street, Shrub Hill - were set alight just before 10.00pm.
Smoke spread to the caf, and women were rescued from their flat above it by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus.
Although they were shaken by the incident, paramedics gave the women the all-clear at the scene.
Sub officer Steve Laugher said the situation could have been worse.
One of the cars set alight was a camper van containing gas cylinders, which could have gone off at any time.
"Fortunately these didn't explode. If they had, the situation would have been a lot worse," said Mr Laugher.
"Two appliances were sent from Worcester. Once there, we made a call for a third.
"The blaze spread to the women's home, above the Hotpot Caf, and fire crew from Blue Watch was forced to break in."
MSD Furniture Imports' warehouse was also damaged.
"We're keen to hear from anyone who may have seen someone acting suspiciously in the area shortly before the fire started," a police spokesman said.
