THE destination of The Soccer Site Malvern League title was finally decided last Thursday night when both contenders ended up being held to 2-2 draws by their visitors.
Green Dragon started the night as favourites as they only needed one point to ensure the title.
If they were expecting an easy task against the team they had recently beaten in the President's Cup final it proved not to be the case as they were made to work very hard by Kempsey United Reserves.
Ryan Leigh gave the visitors the lead when he lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper. Green Dragon's Darren Gwynne then celebrated his return from injury with two goals, the second from the penalty spot. Kempsey then ensured the home side had an anxious last few minutes when Lee Williams smashed home a free kick from 20 yards.
As results turned out Green Dragon did not need the point as their closest challengers Bull Allstars were held to a 2-2 draw by visitors Bell Inn 98. Bull Allstars goals both came from prolific goal scorer Jamie James, the second of which was his 100th goal of the season. Bell Inn's goals came from Tim Febrey and Paul Grubb.
Sunday's games saw Green Dragon presented with the league trophy before their game at St Peters and they then went on to record a 10-0 victory with goals from Matt Beale, Mark Corbett, John Phillips, Stewart Graham, Craig Turbill and five from Darren Gwynne.
The battle for fourth place was won by Madresfield when they defeated home side Morgan Aero 8 by 4-2. Their goal scorers were Sam Black, two from Adam Morse and an own goal with the home side's replies coming from Richard Bird and Jordan Miller.
Talbot Head completed a miserable end to their season, which had started so brightly, when they went down 1-3 to visitors Kempsey United Reserves. Kempsey's goals came from Ryan Leigh and two from Anton Martin with Talbot's goal coming from Adam Heath.
Fromes Hill beat visitors Bell Inn 98 3-2 to climb above them in the table and finish seventh. In the only other league game of the day Brewery only just went down by 2-3 to higher placed visitors Worcester Juniors. Juniors' goals came from Chris White and two from Jamie Lawrence. Brewery's goals were shared by the Locke brothers Patrick and Gavin, who were vying for leading goal scorer before the game, Patrick took that honour.
Following the game The Brewery players presented manager Lionel Bramley with a clock in appreciation of all the effort he had put into running the team. It had been hoped to present it at the club presentation night but with Lionel going into hospital soon, the team wanted to let him know how much he was appreciated and to wish him well, a sentiment that is echoed by all the management committee of the Malvern League.
