MALVERN United were presented with the FA Charter Standard prior to the start of the evening game against Bredon and despite some good football found themselves two down before half time.
MALVERN UNITED 2, BREDON COLTS 2
After the break United began to take control and were rewarded when Rob Lecesse intercepted a clearance to set Nik Zikking on his way and the resultant shot bounced off the cross bar into the path of captain Liam Harford, who calmly slotted home. United continued to press forward with Lee Jenkins masterminding the action from midfield and Tom Ferguson distributing the ball to the front runners. Once again Rob Lecesse robbed the ball from a Bredon defender and beat the keeper to get the equaliser. With Gareth Atkinson, Mike James, Craig Philpotts and Andy Nolan picking up everything in defence, and keeper Alex Jenkins on terrific form with his diving saves, United looked as if they might snatch the winner, but despite good work from Craig Baker and Dave Reynolds they just missed out and settled for a point.
Man of the match was Lee Jenkins.
The return leg on the Sunday carried on in similar vein with Bredon going ahead and showing all the early initiative. But as usual United picked up in the second half and the final result was 3-3.
United's goals were scored by Rob Lecesse, Tom Ferguson and Dave Reynolds.
MALVERN TOWN WANDERERS U14s 9, EVESHAM UNITED U14s 0
ONLY two minutes were on the clock when winger Shaun Carrey rounded the left back and accurately crossed for Zach Blood to rise and head home at the far post for the opener.
A minute later fine approach work from Zach Blood found Matt Hopwood, whose pinpoint cross was headed home powerfully by Luke Arnold from six yards. The third saw Luke Arnold grab his second, again heading home from Shaun Carrey's unselfish distribution. A fiercely struck Matt Bayer free kick could only be parried by the Evesham keeper and Luke Arnold reacted quickest to slide in his hat-trick goal and his side's fourth.
The second half saw Wanderers dominance continue and Zach Blood's wicked centre fell to Luke who made no mistake for 5-0. Tom White's speed and trickery outwitted the visiting defence to rifle home the sixth. Shaun Carrey's mazy run was brought to an abrupt end and up stepped the casual Craig Richards to place the spot kick in the bottom left hand corner for number seven. The following two goals saw a Luke Arnold right wing cross pick out Matt Hopwood, whose well placed header found the bottom corner and to round off an emphatic victory. Luke Arnold claimed his fifth driving home a fine centre from Craig Richards.
Man of the match, sponsored by Malvern Tree and Garden Services, was Luke Arnold.
NEWTOWN SPORTS U13 8,
WORCESTER RANGERS 0
NEWTOWN returned to league duty on Wednesday evening after having won the Trophy World Cup on Sunday.
This victory helped their push towards a second place finish. Last year's prolific duo of Johnson and Ferguson opened and closed the scoring, both with well taken headers but in between goals rained in from a variety of players. After Adam Johnson's opener, Ben Hardy added a second from a cross by Ricky Buckland. Buckland's crossing was a feature of this game and he found Mark Holbrow at the far post as Newtown went three up. Dan Jeynes then continued his fine form with a well taken trio of goals including a delicate chip which proved that there is more to his game than strength and pace. Buckland then thumped in a close range effort before again turning provider for Jamie Ferguson to add the eighth in what was a comfortable victory for the Newtown boys.
NEWTOWN SPORTS COLTS U12s 5, MALVERN TOWN WANDERERS 0
NEWTOWN Sports Colts entertained Malvern Town Wanderers at Lower Howsell.
Playing with a stiff breeze at their backs, the Colts midfield of Milward, Gath, Caffull, Allison and Edwards dominated early proceedings. The defence of Roskams, Scullion and Jaye were rarely threatened and distributed the ball well. The first goal came following good work by Twinberrow and Buckle, who worked the ball to Edwards who hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Five minutes later the move was repeated, Edwards hit another terrific shot which Gibb could only parry into his own net. The Wanderers threatened to break, and Johnson was called to make a sharp save on a bouncy pitch. The Colts grabbed a third through Buckle shortly before half-time when he headed in an Edwards' corner.
Elmes, Powell and Crane came on for the Colts at half-time, which was barely a couple of minutes old, when Edwards completed his hat-trick. The ball broke loose to him on the edge of the area and he lifted the ball over Gibb. Powell clipped the bar and both Twinberrow and Buckle were thwarted by excellent saves from Gibb. Allison grabbed the Colts final goal with a speculative long shot that bounced over the advancing Gibb. As usual, Malvern gave a spirited account of themselves, but it was the Colts, sponsored by Alan Gath Enterprises, that ran out deserved winners.
KAYS BROADHEATH U12s 4,
NEWTOWN JUNIORS U12s 2
NEWTOWN travelled to Worcester to take on newly crowned league champions Kays.
With the wind against them in the first half Newtown struggled to clear their lines and soon found themselves 2-0 down. Spicer in goal pulled off a fine save to deny Kays a third.
The second half saw Newtown come out with a renewed determination and they put a lot of pressure on the Kays' defence. Mason pulled a goal back when his cross managed to find its way into the net. As Newtown looked to equalise they were caught on the counter attack, a swift three man move ended with the Kays' striker finishing in style. Kays' fourth came in a similar fashion. Newtown grabbed a late second goal through Butler but on the day were beaten by a better side and worthy league winners.
Newtown's man of the match was Steve Gilks.
Newtown are sponsored by Wells Joinery.
MALVERN Town Wanderers U9s impressive first season continued with the U8 players taking part in their first ever tournament - the Cheltenham Town Invitation U8.
The league section saw The Wanderers scoring 12 goals with none conceded. A considerable achievement itself against some very good opposition. Playing only 10 minutes per game, goalless matches looked on the cards particularly as The Wanderers are often slow starters but victories of 4-0, 2-0, 3-0, 1-0 and a goaless draw against the eventual finalists saw The Wanderers through.
The league stages saw some good individual performances from Chris Jeffrey, Tom Bottomley, Alex Spring, Ali Hunt and the outstanding Ryan Scullion.
In the semi final with Abbeymead a brace of well taken Chris Jeffrey goals plus one other saw the Wanderers reach their second cup final of the season.
Cleeve Juniors were the final opponents and tournament favourites. Having held the Wanderers to a goalless draw in the league stages an exciting game was in store. The final was played in showers and a cold wind but the final spectacle warmed the 200 strong crowd. The Wanderers never really looked in trouble and, with a well worked Ryan Scullion goal followed by an Ali Hunt effort, the Wanderers ran out comfortable 2-0 winners and clinched their second trophy of the season.
