THE Worcestershire Golf Club players obtained a narrow victory, after a hard fought match, against the Oxford & Cambridge Golfing Society.
Several years ago, the late chairman of the club, Ken Whimster, introduced the annual fixture to the club, one of the highlights of the golfing season at Malvern Wells. The club players eagerly anticipate the fixture against the old blues.
In the morning competition honours were even and at lunch the score was 2 games all. Winners for the Worcestershire were Andy Dunster playing with Steve Bradshaw, who won their match 3 up with 2 to play.
Terry Lloyd, playing with Brian Coleman returned to the clubhouse 1 up and the President of The Worcestershire Union, Norman Bolton, playing with former club captain Charles Davenport, halved their match.
Lunch inspired the home club players and the afternoon games ended with The Worcestershire winning three matches to two and the match overall by 5 to 4. Stuart Bird and former club captain, Mel Stocker, excelled themselves in the afternoon winning 4 and 3.
They were ably supported by local solicitor Dennis Chetwood playing with Andy Dunster, who won their game 2 up. The crucial winning game proved to be that of Norman Bolton playing with former club captain, Brian Coleman, who won 2 and 1.
