FIRE fighters in Worcester have warned people of the importance of making an escape plan in the case of a blaze.
The timely reminder comes after two people were rescued from a flat in Sherriff Street, Shrub Hill, last Thursday night.
The property had only one exit route and this was blocked by four burning cars outside.
"We had to go in to the premises to rescue two women as the flat, next to the Hot Pot Caf, had only one fire exit," said Alec Mackie, spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade.
"A fire like this one brings home how important it is to have an escape route already planned.
Accessible
"Sometimes there is only one fire exit.
''People should always make sure these are accessible, but if not they should make other plans.
"We, in the fire brigade, do all we can to advise people, but it is really up to individuals to come up with their own escape plan.
''Taking just a few minutes to do this could save lives."
People in Worcester have also been reminded to fit smoke alarms.
"These do save lives, and don't cost a great deal to buy," added Mr Mackie.
"But while many people listen to our advice and get smoke alarms, some of them don't maintain them. They should be checked regularly and you should never take out their batteries."
