EXPERIENCE with children was not enough to prepare Ronkswood woman Wendy McNally for delivering a baby - especially not on a bathroom floor.

Mrs McNally, a former nanny, instinctively took over when friend Sandra Poole went into premature labour.

Young Jack, born at just 28 weeks and weighing only 3Ib 2oz, was born before the ambulance service could arrive .

"Ambulance control talked us through," said Mrs McNally, of Medway Road.

"Sandy's husband Clive was shouting up the instructions he was being given over the phone from downstairs. It was a real conveyor belt and a team effort.

"I got the baby's head in the palm of my hands, then caught his little bum coming out.

"It was fantastic. I cleared his airways and I was rubbing him like a puppy. I suppose it was instinct."

Praise

Mrs Poole has no end of praise for her friend, who the family has christened "Midwife Wendy".

"How can you thank someone enough who does something like this? Thank you just doesn't cover it," said Mrs Poole.

"I shudder to think what could have happened if Wendy hadn't been there - things could have been very different.

"We have known Wendy for about 10 years now and she has helped us to bring up our other two children, Charles and Aiden.

"She is an absolute gem and we love her to bits."

Mrs McNally had been on a trip to the Gower with Mrs Poole's son Charles and 10 other children.

She discovered her friend's plight when she went round to take Charles home.

Baby Jack is still in hospital.
