I CAN assure Gary Webb that any misunderstanding on my part was largely due to his incoherent argument (You Say, Friday, May 9).

And his argument doesn't get any better by making disparaging remarks about me.

In making his anti-EU case, Mr Webb insisted that travelling between the states of Virginia and Maryland one doesn't notice the difference.

I think that is probably true, but is that still the case if one happens to be travelling between the American states of Hawaii and Alaska?

The letter also emphasised the difference between France and Germany - by way of a reason as to why a Federal EU will not work.

Well again, are the French and Germans any more different than the French-speaking and English-speaking Canadians?

A federal Europe may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I happen to believe that a united Europe is a safe Europe.
