A FORMER university student from Feckenham had his driving licence revoked following a collision which later resulted in another driver's death from deep vein thrombosis.

Redditch Magistrates Court heard Thomas Kings, 20, of Droitwich Road, was on his way home along Astwood Lane at about 4pm on June 26, 2002, when the accident happened.

John Smytheman, defending, said his client believed he was travelling at about 45mph in a speed limit of 60mph when he approached a right-hand curve in the road.

He added: "It was his judgement and belief that as a vehicle approached around that corner it was coming across the white line onto his side of the carriageway.

"He turned into a hedgerow, hit loose gravel on the road surface, skidded and lost control of the car."

Mr Smytheman said Mr Kings regained control of the Vauxhall Cavalier by turning into the skid, which put him back onto the road but onto the opposite carriageway where he hit a woman motorist's car.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, said Mr Kings' car was still moving forward at some speed at the end of the skid because the collision was one of 'considerable force', resulting in a lot of damage to both cars.

The court was told she suffered a broken ankle and cut knee.

He added she died about six weeks later and a post mortem revealed she had suffered an embolism, 'which was effectively deep vein thrombosis'.

He added Mr Kings, now a mechanic, attended Swansea University but had to give up his course due to the distress caused by the accident.

Mr Kings, who was charged with careless driving, received six penalty points and was fined £265 plus £35 costs.
