MAJOR plans to build 24 new homes on the site of the Jaffar car sales garage in Crabbs Cross looked set to be rejected by Redditch councillors last night.

Wimpey had applied for permission to redevelop the site off Evesham Road with an assortment of three and four bedroom terraced properties.

A three-bedroom detached property and four-bedroom detached property were also planned.

But planning officers feel the plans could mean an "over-development" of the site.

In a report, they said the general design and appearance was acceptable and complementary to the area.

But they said the plans would leave a substantial shortfall in parking provision for residents as measured against the council's standards.

This and inadequate recreation space and issues with inadequate boundaries for some of the homes were the main reason for recommending refusal.

But there were also queries raised by the Environment Agency, which is worried about potential water contamination on the site from previous developments. It recommended a study be carried out before any proposed development.
