A TOWN CENTRE pub has played host to a time-honoured beer ritual.
The ancient Court Leet and Court Baron of Bromsgrove Richman's Club declared the pub fit to serve fine ales in a traditional ceremony dating back to 1199 and the reign of King John.
The procession of dignitaries and fine ale experts commenced their journey at the Ramada Jarvis and worked their way through the town to the Red Lion's doors. The Bailiff, John Weston, banged on the door with his official staff to begin the ceremony and to announce the bailiff's arrival.
Landlord Richard Scott replied with a pint of his finest for Ale Taster Jeremy Sharpe, who subsequently deemed the pub fit to serve beer. At that a 20-strong group of ale enthusiasts descended upon the pub to enjoy the brew.
Mr Scott said; "It's a great tradition to honour and such a prestigious event to host. It has become an annual event and I hope to welcome them through my doors for years to come."
Mr Weston said: "It is a time-honoured tradition that we are keen to keep alive. There are very few things these days that are passed on through the generations so as an ale enthusiast this is a fun and interesting tradition to revere."
