SPEED cameras set up on a Worcester road have clocked more than 800 drivers in a month.
But the Safety Camera Partnership, which is behind the camera on City Walls Road, said the number of speeding cars could be more than double what those recorded
The camera, which is set up to photograph cars going faster than 30mph, has not been operational every day - just twice a week.
In the eight days it was working 812 motorists were caught speeding - more than 100 a day.
"There isn't film in it every day, because it's new and we're not up to full speed," said Heather Mead of the Safety Camera Partnership.
"It's still quite a significant number of people. As the camera has only recently been installed it's not surprising that there have been so many.
"It's been installed to dissuade drivers from speeding and therefore reduce the number of people being killed on the roads.
"It's quite disappointing to see this number, although as people become aware we hope to see a significant reduction."
The camera went live on Tuesday, April 15, and is the first in a series of cameras to be set up across the city. Others, such as spots on New Road and Hylton Road, will have cameras set up by the end of July.
Anyone caught driving over the 30mph limit and under 50mph is automatically fined £60 and their licence is endorsed with three penalty points.
But anyone caught driving faster than 50mph has to go to court.
Other sites in the pipeline include Woodgreen Drive, New Road, Hylton Road, Bromyard Road and Rainbow Hill in Worcester, the A4103 at Leigh Sinton and the A4184 in Evesham.
They are expected to be in place in June and July. There are also a number of mobile cameras travelling around the county to catch speeding motorists on a less permanent basis.
