STRONG feelings over development plans for Upton-upon-Severn Marina led to a demand for the resignation of the town's newly re-elected mayor.

In a letter to Mayor Eric White, an unnamed writer called on him to resign "as a matter of honour."

This was because, as a district councillor, he had voted in favour of an outline planning application for the marina, although the town council had recommended refusal.

At this month's election for Malvern Hills District Council, Coun White had been heard to say that if Upton voters did not agree with him over the marina, this was their opportunity to throw him out.

He lost his seat on the district council, but was returned unopposed to the town council and subsequently re-elected by fellow members to serve a second year as mayor.

At Tuesday's meeting, Coun White read out the letter calling for his resignation, but declined to name the correspondent.

He offered to resign if members wished, but they voted unanimously in favour of his staying.

"You have always been an honourable man and this sounds like someone trying to impose their opinion of what the council should do," said Coun Neil Culley.
