IT has been a time for double celebrations this week at Clifton-upon-Teme Primary School.

The school has not only received a Department of Education Achievement Award for excellent academic performance but has also reached the national finals of the Village School of the Year contest organised by the National Farmers Union.

The nomination submitted to the judges highlights the school's record in taking on the potential threat of closure by raising pupil numbers from a 1998 low of 47 children to almost 70, and the on-site nursery offering education and childcare.

Along with a broad education, children at the school enjoy an incredible number of extra-curricular activities including sport, art, music, dance, rug making, African drumming, circus skills, eco-friendliness, and international links.

According to the nomination statement, it is all down to hardworking staff, an inspirational headteacher and committed board of governors.

The final decision will be announced at a presentation ceremony in London in July.
