MOTORSPORT: Sidecar racer Steve Coombes is targeting an appearance at the Isle of Man's tough Southern 100 road race after impressive displays so far this season.

The Stourport driver took another two victories in the East Midlands Racing Association Formula Two Sidecar Championships at Mallory Park with passenger John Luebke.

Coombes drove his Ireson Kawasaki 600cc to a two-second victory over eight laps of the damp Leicestershire track with Dave Calvert and Ben Sergeant in second place.

Then the 30-year-old clocked the fastest lap of 58.76 seconds on his way to an outstanding success in race two, finishing more than 12 seconds in front of Calvert and Sergeant.

He said: "I started from second row on the grid in the first race but it started to rain and everybody was on slicks.

"It was slippy and difficult to grip but I took first place and held on. I was very pleased.

"I took the lead straight away in the second race in drier track conditions and again held it."

Coombes now has 87 championship points and is a massive 28 clear of nearest challengers Richard and Gary Holdsworth.

In his last Super F2s Championship race at Donington Park, he finished 14th overall and third in the intermediate class with passenger Stu Castles.

The Wyre Forest man's successful season so far has led him to set his sights on the popular Southern 100 challenge from July 7 until 10.

Coombes is currently lending his mechanic skills to Worcester driver Phil Dongworth who is in TT practice on the Isle of Man.
