A FIELD of 94 couples entered The Worcestershire Golf Club's Mixed Open Greensome Stableford Competition.
The competition was played in ideal golfing weather and the course was in very good condition.
The Worcestershire couples were in good form and three pairs returned scores of 37 points. John Daly and Liz Evans were placed sixth on the usual countback system. In fifth place were Gordon and June Jones whilst Paul and Diane Meakin edged ahead of them to be placed fourth. In third position, with a score of 38 points was Andy Green playing with April Wilding.
Two visitors from the Chigwell Golf Club, a M & Mrs Ahern were placed second with a score of 39 points. The winners however were Vic Hammond and Hazel Cartledge, who used their local knowledge to return the excellent score of 40 points.
The best gross Stableford score was returned by two visitors, Andrew Peats and Linda Moore, from the Stockwood Vale Golf Club. Following the competition the prizes were presented by club captain, Simon Tinkler and lady captain Kate Foster.
In the Mid Week Stableford Competition four players in Division Two, Brian Hawkings, Alan Garden, John Houston and senior captain Gordon Emery, all returned the very creditable score of 40 points. The winner with the best score of the day 41 points, was Chris Almgill.
In Division One three players returned scores of 37 points and were only separated on count-back. Andy Longley was placed fifth, Fred Wortley fourth and Martin Lloyd third. In second place with 38 points was Greg Mayers. No-one in Division One could equal Stephen Lane however who won the division with a score of 39 points.
The club's A team began the season with an excellent home win against Kidderminster, winning by 4 to 1. The outstanding performance of the day was that of Nick Smith and Mark Read who returned 'a dog's licence', winning 7 and 6.
Other notable winners were Colin Lane playing with Dave Jones who won 4 and 3 and club captain Simon Tinkler playing with Terry Lloyd who won their game 3 and 2.
In the club's Spring Meeting Medal Competition four players in Division One returned below par figures. In fourth place with a score of 70 was Dave Farrell who was just edged out of third place by Jamie Dunster. Mark Read continued his excellent early season form returning a score of 68, the same score as the winner of Division One, Geoff Lamb. The winner of Division Two, Terry Goode, returned the best score of the day, a 65, five strokes better than Joe Bayliss who came second. Alan Taylor was third with a net score of 70.John Houston came third in Division Three with a net score of 71. Ron Richardson, the club's vice captain, also returned a score of 71 to gain second place.
The winner of Division Three however, with a net score of 70, was Les Facer.
Over 50 ladies competed in the Combined Medal Competition, but only three bettered the par for the course.
In Division One, former lady captain Jill Exell scored a net 69 to gain first place. Jill Pinner second and Diane Meakin third.
In Division Two, Pam Reynolds returned the best net score of the day, a 68, to gain first place five shots ahead of Kate Cross who came second. Janet Strain was third with a net 73.
In the 41-45 handicaps Stableford Competition April Wilding returned with a score of 39 points to obtain first place and had her handicap reduced by two strokes as a result.
