STUART Daniels of Malvern and Malcolm Fare of Hanley Swan won the Hereford & Worcester County foil and epee titles respectively last weekend at Malvern College.
In the foil final, Daniels took an early 5-1 lead against fellow Worcester Fencing Club foilist Toby Rumford, but Rumford fought back to equalise at eight-all and then moved two hits ahead. Daniels caught him at 13-all and quickly delivered a fast attack followed by a parry riposte to win 15-13.
Veteran Malcolm Fare had to use all his experience to retain his epee title by an equally narrow margin, beating the fast-improving Max Rowe-Haynes for the second year running.
Two weeks earlier Fare had won the Bath Open Veterans Foil. In the final, to 10 hits, he faced the holder, Brian Causton of Brighton, and was soon two hits down. But, using his reach to pull back the deficit, he managed to equalise at nine-all, then parried the next attack and riposted to win the fight.
In April Daniels, Rumford and club-mate Sam Stockley fenced for Worcester in the Redditch Cup open team foil tournament, defeating seven other teams to win the event.
Worcester Fencing Club meets at the King's School sports hall in Severn Street on Friday evenings. Further details from the secretary Simon Webb on 01684 567500.
