MR Burgess and Mr Cook make use of some rather spurious logic to argue in favour of hare coursing (You Say, Thursday, May 15).

Their implication appears to be that hare conservation has some sort of symbiotic relationship with coursing. What utter rubbish!

It's possible to artificially maintain the hare population without the need for coursing.

Also, the suggestion that hare coursing isn't cruel is ridiculous - the use of death as a form of entertainment ceased to be civilised in Roman times.

It would be like sending a Rottweiler after a small child for fun.

Besides, this whole issue has less to do with animal preservation than the preservation of our humanity.
