BROMSGROVE builders are scrambling to secure permission to build new houses before planning officers put the brakes on future town developments.

Elmsvyne is just one of the construction firms to lodge an application with Bromsgrove District Council after it was announced they were considering halting the town's growth.

It has been suggested the rapid expanse of Bromsgrove, including current developments at the former Garringtons site is putting pressure on the infrastructure.

With school classrooms bulging and health care services being reduced, residents are being asked to give their views on whether town development should halt in a council-driven consultation period.

However, before the decision is made Elmsvyne is seeking permission to build fifteen new apartments on land in New Road, Aston Fields near to the railway station.

Company director Gary Bridgewater said: "We are looking to develop the land in New Road as it is very much an up and coming area of Bromsgrove, since the improvements made at the railway station.

"And with the possibility of the council halting the building of new houses this could be our last chance to lodge an application."

The apartments will be targeted at young, first-time buyers in Bromsgrove, looking to get onto the first step of the property ladder.

Elmsvyne is also responsible for the new build of apartments in Worcester Road, on the site of the former Sampson Pub and Hadley's Pet Shop.

"There is a need for houses for first- time buyers and that is the market we are aiming at and there has been so much interest for the apartments in Worcester Road, it has been absolutely crazy."

They will be completed in about a month.
