WORCESTER Nomads were once more thwarted by the bad May weather as only the Sunday second XI played, in a one-sided fixture against Broadwas.
Broadwas batted first and amassed 243-5 against some indifferent bowling and fielding.
The visitors never entertained thoughts of inviting the home side to chase the runs, and in the end Nomads were relieved to hang on for a draw, having scored 82-9.
The youth section have now played a number of fixtures, and have achieved some notable successes.
The U14 boys did well to beat Malvern quite convincingly.
Good fielding by all was a feature of the game, and there was also a good opening stand of 74 between Bryant and Illingworth. Josh Stafford showed some form with some attacking bowling and Geoff Taylor was also very accurate at the death.
At U13 level Nomads also played their first match of the season and won by the comfortable margin of 53 runs. Tom Bryant opening, top scored with 28 including four fours all from quality strokes. The middle order kept up the impetus with Dominic Wood 15 and James Smith 11no. The score was also augmented by 24 wides and 12 byes.
Nomads' bowlers coped better with the windy conditions and slow pitch, and the quicker bowlers, Bryant, Mourier and J Smith each removed a top batsman. The bowlers were helped by some safe catching to the extent that only Davies made double figures. Webb cleaned up the tail with 3-1 in 11 balls ably assisted by D Wood 2-4 and K Smith 2-14. On a difficult pitch J Brain did well to only concede three byes and took a good catch.
Worcester had the better of the two fixtures at U12 and U11 levels. In the former, Nomads only managed to put together a score of 72-4, with James Smith top-scoring, retiring unbeaten on 31. Jack Longley showed good touch, supporting with 17. Worcester got to the target losing only three wickets, despite an excellent spell from opener Thomas Malone, with 2-10 from his four overs, but Worcester duly wrapped up the win by seven wickets.
Against the U11s Worcester won the toss and chose to bat first and after 12 overs the Nomads bowlers had restricted the Worcester batsman to 229 this was backed up by some good fielding. The last pair Padden and Patel then took the home teams score to 266 in the final four overs with some aggressive batting. Ben Warren finished with 0-8 from his three overs.
The Nomads batting struggled to come to terms with the accurate Worcester bowling loosing wickets at regular intervals.
After 16 overs Nomads finished on 198 with the light deteriorating, leaving Worcester winners by 68 runs.
