JOHN Brain was suitably unimpressed with referee Tim Wigglesworth's performance as Worcester Rugby Club brushed Moseley aside.

The Sixways director of rugby believed Worcester would have racked up more points if the official had penalised some cynical Moseley tactics during a frustrating match for supporters.

"It was a frustrating game for all involved," he said. "Moseley came to Sixways with quite a negative idea of how to play and I think the referee actually helped them.

"I understand it was his first game at this level and I think he was a little bit out of his depth - it certainly showed that it was his first.

"It was difficult for us to play positively but the guys must be given credit because they overcame the difficulties and scored 12 tries. Someone told me that it was the record equalling home score but, at the same time, I don't think we played a good team and we didn't have a good referee."

Understood

"I don't think he understood that Moseley were coming here to slow the game down. He couldn't have looked at the league table before kick-off. He wasn't strict enough on the floor and he was inconsistent on many things. He let Moseley get away with too much - diving on the ruck never seemed to get penalised and once or twice he actually got in the way of play."

Brain will also make it clear that, in future games against the top sides in National One, he wants to see a better standard of official.

"We certainly wouldn't want to see that referee if we were playing a top five side. There's absolutely no way and we'll be making that known."

The former Gloucester man, however, was delighted with Tom Richardson's display as the super sub made his first significant impact at senior level with a hat-trick.

"The one thing Tom has got and got in abundance is pace. To score a hat-trick will do him a world of good and really boost his confidence. I'm very, very pleased for him."
