MOTORSPORT: Kart racer Nathan Freke tried his hand at a different form of four-wheeled motorsport when he took part in a Rally Scholarship day on the gravel forest stages of north Wales.
Having no rally car experience, he was expecting to spend the day driving in a relatively low-powered Ford Ka.
But the Ka was broken and he ended up driving a more lively Peugeot 206 rally car which is normally reserved for experienced drivers.
The day was the first of three rounds to find two new young rally stars.
Freke improved with every run over the four stages and by the end of the day had posted times within 10 seconds of those set by his instructor.
Instructor and rally driver Jason Barnes said: "Nathan showed consistent improvement during the day and ended going faster than we would have expected in the very wet conditions.
"We will be inviting him back to the second stage on tarmac."
