A WORLD record was broken in South Littleton yesterday when two Long Lartin prison officers pushed a car more than 40 miles around a housing estate.
Brian Davies, of Norval Road in South Littleton, and his colleague at Long Lartin, senior officer Jeremy Mole, broke the record by pushing a 928kg car, specially prepared by the MG Sport and racing team, nearly 41 miles.
Mr Davies, who lost his eight-year-old niece, Aleysha, to cancer last year, wanted to raise money for the Wish Upon A Star charity, which funds holidays for terminally ill children.
They needed to break the record held by two Texans for pushing a car 33 miles in less than 24 hours to make it into the Guinness Book of Records.
They broke the record after only 13 hours and ended the challenge after 16 hours as crowds cheered them on.
Organisers are still collecting donations and cheques payable to When You Wish Upon A Star can be sent to organiser Mary Nielsen at 5 Norval Road, South Littleton, Worcs, WR11 8YD. The prison's benevolent fund plans to match the money raised by the two officers.
