FIVE tries is no big deal. I once scored that amount between 1992 and '97!
Seriously though, Chris Garrard's try haul has had us all talking this week about what an achievement it was in the 71-14 win over Otley.
Garrard's performance, all round, was excellent but then again the whole team were superb from the first whistle to the last.
We made such a great start on Saturday and had scored within 37 seconds of the match. When that happens it obviously gives you a great platform and instills a tempo which stays with you for the rest of the game. Chris will be the first to admit that some of his tries were the product of great team play and, especially, good planning by the coaching team.
Coaches rarely get the credit they deserve and most of the time are only mentioned when things are going wrong. I think though that if the Otley game showed anything, it underlined the thoroughness of John Brain and Andy Keast's preparation. There was a lot of good work being done off the ball and when that work results in tries for the team, it is a very rewarding feeling for the players and the coaches.
Without doubt it was our best performance of the season and Chris' five tries were the icing on top. All credit to him because he is a 100 per cent guy. He works at his game and looks to keep on improving every week.
I certainly feel he has benefited from his time at Worcester and will keep on getting better if he stays next season. On Saturday, his work rate was superb, went down on loose ball and didn't miss a tackle. Scoring tries is, of course, a big part of a winger's game but we all know there is so much more required from players when you get to certain levels.
The great things about Chris are his enthusiasm and his ability to read the game. I don't think I am the only person at the club who hopes he stays on next year because 19 tries with five games to go certainly says it all.
We travel to Bracknell on Saturday obviously high on confidence but wary of their threat. People will scoff at that statement after they conceded 11 tries at the weekend while we scored that amount.
However, it is important to give the opposition absolute respect before you go into a game. We have seen footage of their home games and they certainly do not make it easy. It's a narrow ground and I'm not so sure Saturday will be another try-fest. We will have to work hard for everything because with them second from bottom, they are fighting for their lives. If one thing guards you against complacency it is Exeter's result against Henley. Who would have predicted that?
We have a number of players coming back from injury such as Christian Evans and Martin Morgan. Richard Nias is not far away either so I've got a few people snapping at my heels for a starting place! I think, though, the players made it difficult for the coaches to change things around after such a performance on Saturday.
Neil Mason started a league game for the first time and he was excellent considering how nervous he would have been. It is always difficult going up a level and finding your feet but Neil seemed to take it all in his stride.
The great thing for the academy lads is that under John and Andy the door seems ajar. Talking to them, I think they felt that was not always the case in years gone by.
The Sixways crowd were again exceptional at the weekend. It's been a roller-coaster of a season and we have had our ups and downs. I just hope they went away happy on Saturday night because they deserve it after such great support over the season. I hope we can give them something else to cheer about at Bracknell!
