BLOOD donors who go that extra mile to save lives could win an award for their efforts.
The scheme, launched by the National Blood Service, recognises those who give renewed life to thousands of sick and injured people each year.
Donors, supporters and members of staff can be nominated for the special awards, which are part of the A Lot to Say Thank You For campaign.
To qualify, they must have performed a special act between September 1, 2002 and September 30, 2003.
NBS communications officer, Lyndsay Stewart, said there was a special group of people whose efforts went unnoticed.
"People have done incredible, selfless things to help the NBS," she said.
Encouraged
"One company encouraged over 80 per cent of its staff to help by giving blood on a Bank Holiday.
"There was also a blood recipient who ran a marathon to raise awareness and a collection team who, faced with adverse weather and a frozen lorry lift, transported all the equipment by hand to ensure a donor session continued.
"By nominating a person, group or organisation who has done something special, we can thank and recognise them for what they have done."
Successful nominees will be invited to a regional Special Awards event next spring.
For a nomination form, call the helpline on 08457 711 711. The closing date is Tuesday, September 30.
