YOUNG volunteers are joining forces to create a wildlife garden at Malvern Hills Youth Hostel this weekend.

They will be creating a bog garden and rockery, enhancing the hostel's pond and installing a log shelter for insects and small animals.

Yvol, the Worcester-based youth volunteering programme, and South Worcestershire Millennium Volunteers will work alongside young people taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and horticulture and conservation students from St Peter's Adult Supported Learning group, Birmingham.

Plants and trees chosen to attract birds and butterflies will be planted by volunteers.

Yvol co-ordinator Sue Warriner said: "The creation of a wildlife garden at Malvern Hills Youth Hostel is a project that both Yvol and South Worcestershire Millennium Volunteers have been really keen to promote.

"It is a quality volunteering opportunity for young people to get involved in that will benefit both them and the community."

Youth hostel manager Graham Wood said: "The wildlife garden will be a visual asset for the hostel, creating an attractive space for guests to enjoy, as well as an educational facility for many of the school groups that stay here."
